This historic town is located a few minutes off Interstate 80 in the Sierra Nevada mountains in the heart of the gold country. Dutch flat is perched at 3144 feet in elevation and is about 30 miles Northeast of Auburn. The town of Dutch Flat is the registered landmark #397 on the California Historical Landmarks and the Dutch Flat Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.

Dutch Flat was settled in 1851 by gold miners but soon became an important stagecoach stop and the center of much controversy over the Transcontinental Railroad. There is so much history in this town from the Dutch Flat Hotel, Hearse House, general store and period Victorian homes. You may have read about Mark Twain lecturing in the old Opera House (also known as The Athens of the Foothills), or perhaps you saw an episode of Ghost Adventures featuring the Dutch Flat Hotel or perhaps you might be interested in tickets to the ghost tours offered around Halloween in the hotel.

The entire community is nostalgic and was modeled from quaint New England Villages and the architecture is stunning to this day. Some of the most beautiful homes I have seen in California are located in Dutch Flat and serve as the example for the style, strength and function of home building from the gold rush era. Dutch flat offers beautiful mountain scenery from the tall pine trees to the sweeping Bear River running along the back of the town. There is no shortage of recreation opportunities here as Dutch Flat is located at the best starting point for four wheelers, dirt bike and ATV riders, hikers, campers and explorers.

There are so many gold rush era cabin ruins, historic cemetery's, caves, gold mines and so many other areas to explore in the vicinity. Dutch Flat is a small and neighborly community. Everyone I have ever met in this town is friendly and warm. Be sure to stop in at the Dutch Flat Trading Post if you are ever in town and take a look at the old Wells Fargo safe which still sits securely in place since its original placement in the 1800s. You must see the homes for yourself even if Dutch Flat isn't where you chose to buy your next home so be sure to view the listings of available properties!
