This unincorporated town is situated conveniently off Interstate 80 at 2,005 feet elevation and is about 8 miles Northeast of Auburn. The history of Applegate dates back to 1849 when Lisbon Applegate who, like thousands after him, made the journey to California with high hopes and possibly a little gold fever. Applegate settled and established a fruit ranch which sat where Oliver's Gas Station sits today. Like many of the towns in this area, the Transcontinental Railroad also shaped the development of this community.

Applegate is located just below the regular snow line but is known to occasionally get snow at times. There offers hiking trails, rivers and lakes nearby for your recreation pleasure. The Foresthill Divide trail, Lake Clementine, Auburn State Recreation area and Rollins Lake are all a short drive from Applegate. The homes in this community vary from large rustic homes with all of the conveniences of modern homes to ranch style homes with acreage.
